First Worn : Otakon (2001)
A costume 16 years in the making. Well, not exactly but that is how long I have wanted to do this dress. I actually started planning this out last year, and started gathering materials.
No pattern used for this. Materials used: many yards of satalure for the underskirt, many yards of velvet flocking for bodice and overskirt, 2 different colors of Casa coordinates sheer material(green for sleeves, peach for upper torso and neck so jewels had something to hang off of), a ton of jewels and a bottle of jewel glue.
Jewels used were in shades of green or white; been gathering the jewels for quite a time. Jewels used were: green fibereyes, vintage green opalish glass, vintage green mottled glass, vintage rhinestones, and some modern acrylic jewels. I want to try adding a few more jewels, but will have to stop fairly soon as dress is getting too heavy.
I had started working on the dress, then learned that Colleen Doran was going to be a Otakon so stepped up my work on it. I was hoping to compete in the costume contest with this dress as creator/artist was there and 'A Distant Soil' was anime influenced. Unfortunately, I wasn't choosen out of the line, so was not judged.
But, I did get to the panel that Colleen was speaking at on Friday at Otakon to see if she would recognize the dress; since she had last drawn it 15 years ago. She looked at it, then looked again - and recognized it. I was happy that she saw that it was her design.
